DiscoverCity Launches During Internet Week Denmark

During the Internet Week Denmark, a young team of international students launched their startup DiscoverCity, a unique platform designed for students to discover and share the best – but yet unexplored – places in Aarhus. The site is designed by students for students. Based on a map view, a user can choose between different categories such as Food, Study, Nature, Culture, Fun, Sport and Shops, all organised in a clean and easy-to-navigate design. Recommendations by other users will offer the most hidden – but also the best – insights on where to go or what to do.

What Is DiscoverCity?

DiscoverCity is a simple, visual, interactive and personal place for students and young people to find all the necessary information and unexplored spots in their city. From the best places to have a cup of coffee, to the hidden spots to go for a walk or study, the site invites students to co-create the environment around them by letting them share their discoveries with friends. Reaching globally, while preserving the local spirit and uniqueness of the city strengthens its brand and adds value to the local community.

The idea came out of a commons struggle that young people, Danish or international, are moving to big cities every year with the same questions: What can I do here? How can I spend my free time? What are the best restaurants, cafes, and bars for going out? The founders of DiscoverCity wanted to improve this experience by allowing your network to provide recommendations for you, removing a large part of the legwork that discovering a new city requires. The site has added benefits also offering exclusive offers, promotions, deals and discounts to restaurants, bars and cafés.

Launching at the Right Time

The idea was developed by a team of six international students, Youth Goodwill Ambassadors of Denmark, for the National City Branding Competition held in November 2012 in Copenhagen. Having won the first place for this contest of promoting Aarhus and Denmark as a whole, the young team was spurred to further develop the idea. Since then they have established partnerships with Aarhus Kommune, Aarhus University and Youth Goodwill Ambassadors of Denmark (Copenhagen Capacity), allowing the team to design and develop the website.

The team decided to launch during Internet Week, a Danish festival celebrating the Internet from 28th April to 2nd May. Its open to all, digital professionals, students, and citizens making it a great platform to connecting to an Internet savy audience of 200 plus people.

Mayor Congratulates Students on Launch

Jacob Bundsgaard, Mayor of Aarhus, also recognised the benefits for students and young people that DiscoverCity offers. “I am sure a lot of new students will turn to this website when they first arrive in Aarhus”, he said during the Internet Pioneer Awards held after the launch. In order to help the audience understand the idea, he showed the new promotional video of DiscoverCity produced by Gaffa Media.

DiscoverCity is also hoping to expand beyond Aarhus, also offering guides to Copenhagen, Aalborg, and Odense in the coming future. You can see the company’s promotional video here:
